After some talks and an exchange of tobacco and a frying pan, Moses Austin considered them good friends, but after a warning of Karankawas at the mouth of a nearby river, Moses wrote in his journal that Karankawas are universal enemies of man and cannot be befriended and must be removed in order for Anglo-American settlers to live in peace.

Sounding, we found seven fathoms, and he was of the opinion that we should keep off shore till dawn. As the number of survivors dwindled rapidly, they were enslaved for a few years by various American Indian tribes of the upper Gulf Coast. So we left in the direction we had seen the canoe going on the night we came here.

The women were described as plainer, shorter and of stouter build than the men. Texas is commonly divided into East and West, although the dividing line between the two is ambiguous. So the inspector and I undertook this.

Myth and History in Cabeza de Vaca

After the people had eaten I sent Lope de Oviedo, who was the strongest and heartiest of all, to go to some trees nearby and climb to the top of one, examine the surroundings and the country in which we were. Other major rivers traversing the state are the Brazos at 1, miles [2, km], the longest river solely in Texasas well as the SabineTrinity, and Red rivers, the last of which forms a large portion of the border between Texas and Oklahoma.

All the many Indians from Florida we saw were archers, and, being very tall and naked, at a distance they appear giants. I went to call them, and in great fear they came. On Saturday, the 1st of May, the day on which all this had happened, he ordered that they should give to each one of those who had to go with him, two pounds of ship-biscuit and one-half pound of bacon, and thus we set out upon our journey inland.

The Governor, with the whole fleet, sailed for that place, but midways, at a port named Cape Santa Cruz, he thought best to stop and send a single vessel to load and bring these stores.

The two states disputed over the Karankawa, and they were eventually returned to Reynosa. But our men in the barge held them back, and so the other Indians forsook their canoe, leaving us very despondent and sad for the loss of those two Christians.

There are two distinct languages spoken on the island; those of one language are called Capoques, those of the other Han. The pilot we had taken ran the vessels aground on the sands called "of Canarreo," so that the next day we were stranded and remained stranded for fifteen days, the keels often touching bottom.

And they stayed with us there, telling how, on the fifth of that same month, their barge stranded a league and a half from there, and they escaped without anything being lost.

On that occasion I would have hailed death with delight rather than to see so many people around me in such a condition. Now, at the time they pluck this fruit, other Indians from beyond come to them with bows for barter and exchange, and when those turn back we thought of joining them and escaping in this way.

Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca (cc) The journey of Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca remains one of the most amazing feats of exploration in the Americas. Cabeza de Vaca returned to Spain in and expressed outrage at the Spanish treatment of Indians. He led an expedition in and from Santos, Brazil to Asuncion, Paraguay.

In "The Narrative of Cabeza de Vaca", Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca’s fight for survival, while being deprived of the basic necessities of life, proves there is a change in him from the beginning of the narrative to the end.
